PRESIDENT'S COLUMN

Well it’s a great honour to be your new president and I am looking forward to working with you all to better our local community, the world community and our humble club of Crows Nest.
I respect greatly those who have come before me and look forward to the continued mentorship from you all you. Thank you to Peter and Mark for your help in the leadup to change over and thank you to my board and all the members in advance for the good we are going to do.
When I think about our club and what I can bring to it, the most obvious point of difference is youth. From all of you, I have learnt that does not mean more energy, it doesn’t mean more drive and passion but I think it brings a different perspective.
I want this club to grow and want this club to flourish. For us to do that we need more members and we need them to be able to be as involved as possible. With said we need to work towards making membership more accessible to our time-poor generation. Through tech and through more lore local community work and consultation and through allowing people to help in their own way, within reason.
We have a new home for our Monday lunches and I think it is a good one. Now we need to go outside these walls and start finding local causes that need our help. Harold mentioned to me the idea of working closely with North Sydney police to determine the areas they need help. I think this is something we need to start right away.
We need to continue the good work we already do in our local community and overseas, working with our corporate partners and fellow rotary clubs. we will be working on continuing the global grant for Kenya and the local grants with Talldumunde and or the butterfly foundation.
There are big shoes to fill in the international, vocational and foundation portfolios but we will look to broaden those too.
I am open to suggestions and any help I can get. Most of you have been doing this a lot longer than me and I will continue to look to all of you for guidance and ideas.
Let’s continue to do good things
With that, let me introduce the new board for 17/18 and again thank you in advance:
SECRETARY – Mark Staples
TREASURER – Simon Babbage

COMMUNITY SERVICE – Sue Raveane

Thank you.

Yours in Rotary

THE YEAR IN REVIEW

You will find a comprehensive list of the 2016-17 Activities and Achievements of the Club with the Changeover Programme, so I do not propose to discuss each item.
This year the Club has embraced the Union Hotel as our meeting venue which will hopefully stop our meandering through Crows Nest Restaurants. We still meet weekly as a Club.
Compliance issues are up to date.   Fundraising has continued on course with our regular BBQs (19) together with a record sale of our Melbourne Cup Trifecta tickets plus the addition of our successful new fun venture- a Poker night.
Already this year we have given $8500 in donations to local community organisations.
We are close to lodging an International Grant in Kenya partnered with the Rotary Club of the Rift Valley and our corporate member – So They Can.
The club continues to be strongly involved in youth and community items as listed. We are awaiting the imminent decision on a current District Grant Application relating to Taldumande Youth Services.
Of course like all Rotary Clubs in the Western countries, membership is a huge concern. Our Club has lost 8 members this year – due to the usual causes – age of the members and hence a change in circumstances. Fortunately the 20% of members that do 80% of the work remain intact. We need to focus on membership to share the load. Younger members present many hassles due to the nature of present day employment and the time poor life style of today making permanency of membership and regular attendance at meetings difficult/ unattractive for them.
All in all, a good year for the Club and a good result. I would like to thank my secretary and Board for their strong support. I would also like to express my gratitude to those longer serving Rotarians in the Club who have shared their experience and knowledge with me to improve my role as President.
It would be remiss of me not to publicly acknowledge the fact that PDG Harold Sharp is transferring from the Club. We understand why.  Harold has had a long career in Rotary and as his star has ascended so too has he carried the Rotary Club of Crows Nest with him; ensuring that the Club punches well above its weight. Thank you Harold for your service to Rotary and to Crows Nest Club; we will miss you.
Finally I would like to thank Tom and Joy Sweeney for offering to decorate the room. Thank you.
My Final duty is to ask President Elect Alon Beran to come forward to be inducted as our new President for 2017 -2018
