PRESIDENT IAN'S COMMENTS

Dear Members,

It’s back to the “Crowie” next Monday.

The iconic Crows Nest Hotel, or the “Crowie” as it is affectionately known, has almost completed an extensive renovation, taking approximately one year and costing $9 million to restore back to it’s former glory.

Built in 1927, the hotel is an historic landmark in the heart of Sydney’s North Shore.  The builders have worked to fully restore the heritage significance of the building, retaining the well-known curved red brick façade, projecting balconies and arched windows, grand entry foyer and ornate spiralling timber staircase.  The highlight of the renovation is the rear courtyard and roof top terrace bar, showcasing a detailed wall sculpture scaling along the new staircase and six metre illuminated tree sculpture.

I hope you will all be pleasantly surprised to see the new set up and our meeting location, and I look forward to personally greeting you next Monday.

Cheers,

Ian

WE ARE BACK AT THE PUB!

At long last, we're back at the Pub from this Monday, 20 June!

That's the good news; the bad news is our meeting dues need to become $20 - a small price to pay for a permanent venue.

REMEMBER - WE ARE MEETING AT THE PUB THIS MONDAY 20 JUNE

Our Guest Speaker will be Charlie Barnett who is a Twice Past President of our Mosman club and will be District 9685's City North Zone Coordinator for The Rotary Foundation in 2016-17.

Charlie joined the Rotary Club of Mosman in November 1985 with the classification of Armed Services - Army.

After a 31 year military career as an Army Aviator, Charlie retired in 1987 and enjoyed a successful business career finally retiring from Electroboard in 2006.

Since joining the Rotary Club of Mosman, Charlie has been actively involved in all Avenues of service and has served on the board on several occasions including a term as President in 1990-1991. During his term as President the Club's major project was "Save Water, Save Lives", a water supply project in Indonesia.

While employed by Ansett Airfreight Charlie arranged with the General Manager Federal Airports Corporation for the installation of money collection bins in the International Terminal at Sydney Airport.

In the first year the Club raised $9,112 from the project. This escalated dramatically to $100,000 plus a year from the Airport Fund until privatisation when new owners flicked Mosman to ingratiate themselves with the local Rotary Clubs. They had never performed in the past and now dilute the benefit by using Security firms to clear the boxes and bank the money – FOR A FEE!!

Notwithstanding this, as a result of this ongoing source of funds the club has been able to undertake a vast array of International Projects and Charlie has been heavily involved in developing the Hand Surgery Project in Vietnam and many other worthwhile projects. Charlie was also instrumental in the establishment of the Brian Edney Fund which will ensure an ongoing source of funding for International projects since losing the privilege.  Mosman still collects from the Domestic Terminal to cover two Youth Exchange students.

Throughout his time in Rotary, Charlie and Rae have opened their home to exchange students and visiting GSE team members. Charlie has held several positions in District administration including serving on the GSE committee and serving two terms as District Governor's Representative and was the District Governor's Aide to Danny Low in 2003-04.

Charlie's involvement with Rotaract lead to his participation in the annual Splash for Cash swimathon and through this he has raised in excess of $35,000 for the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children.

Still at it!  With Howard Sullivan's guidance and help, Mosman continues to install water systems in remote places like the Fohorem at 3000 ft altitude on the Indonesian border with East Timor in 2008 and recently in Lao near the Plain of Jars using 13 clubs from three districts in three countries to fund a Global Grant. Again Crows Nest played a major part.

Last week Charlie completed a Charity Walk in the Larapinta Track for Books in Homes.
LAST MONDAY'S MEETING

The first of our regular periodic evening meetings was well attended.

Our guest speaker was Sarha Arumanayagam who is the Chief Executive Officer of the Phoenix House Foundation.  Satha provided us with an update on Phoenix House's current fund raising activities.

Phoenix House provides early intervention and support services to the most challenged young people living in Sydney and delivers life-changing outcomes.  Each year it provides support programs to more than 500 young people each year to help them realise their dreams and aspirations, unlock their potential, achieve their goals and transform their lives.

Les Walsh proposed the International Toast to the Rotary Club of North Vancouver BC, Canada.

GET SOCIAL
Did you know more than a billion people use social media every day?

Social media is readily accessible, instantaneous, cost effective and user friendly. It offers our Rotary club a fantastic opportunity to communicate more effectively with members and supporters and can energise the way you promote your club and find new members.

Here are just a few examples of ways our club is using social media:

  • Advising members and potential members when and where the next meeting will be and who the speaker is.
  • Sharing Facebook posts by Rotary International and our Rotary District 9685
  • Sharing details of our club’s events like our regular BBQs, special meetings etc
  • Following the Facebook pages of local businesses and organisations.  We may comment on their posts; or start a conversation.
  • Share stories and photos from our club service projects. When people see the great work our club is doing, they’re more likely to join.
When people “like” your post or retweet it, it shares the info with their entire social network.

Once you get active on social media, stay active. The more you’re connected, the more likely you are to make connections – and help us get new members.

Getting started on social media can help our club get the word out, especially where younger people hang out, and attract new members.

Follow us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/CrowsNestRotary and help the cause.
