PRESIDENT'S COLUMN
Hello, Members and our Rotary Friends receiving this eBulletin.
As Rotarians, our members are currently frustrated by this Lockdown Pandemic ‘Stay at Home’ order.  But we all realise and appreciate the message and philosophy being professed by our NSW Government, that the only way out of these restrictions is vaccination.  So I reiterate that message here, please help all of us, you, me and your families, ‘go get the Jab!’
And a real blow to all of us ‘Do It Yourself’ experts, is the restriction placed on Bunnings!  Now, only Tradies can shop at Bunnings!  For the mental health of all us ‘DIY’ experts, I hope that restriction doesn’t last long!
Crows Nest Rotary is progressing with sales of our Melbourne Trifecta Tickets, see the article below.
Last Monday we had Angie Elder and Georgia Thacker, from ‘Canteen’, explaining all about their organisation assisting children with and affected by cancer.  Such an interesting presentation!  Our club hopes to fund $5,000 towards an ‘IT Games’ initiative in the future!
During Next Monday’s meeting we’ll hear from our own, local State Emergency Services.
Click here at 12.30pm next Monday 30th August to join us.
Think Rotary!
Stay safe, enjoy your Lockdown week and keep in touch with your friends.
Yours in Rotary Service
President Philip

Membership Revitalises Rotary Clubs
The energy of Rotary comes from the collective energy of its members. In large and small ways, how we support one another and work cooperatively on projects is how we ‘do good in the world’. New members provide energy, enthusiasm, skills and passion, which drive Rotary clubs forward.
Across Australia and New Zealand, Clubs recruit 12% new members every year, but lose 15% of members every year. This is not a path to the future, added to which our club membership is ageing. We simply must change our model to be relevant in a world which has changed dramatically.
During the current health crisis, every corner of society is rethinking its priorities, core values and future directions.   It is essential that Crows Nest Rotary reassesses and reimagines what it should be like in the future.

AND here is an invite to you, Rotarian or not !
Our Cluster 2 of eight Rotary Clubs, are having a get-together (virtual) and casual chat,,, over a glass of wine or beer, at the end of the working week ie this Friday evening at 6pm on Zoom.

‘Chinwag’ get togethers, are a bit like going to the pub for a beer - you never know who you will meet, what you will talk about, but you do know it will be fun.   And in a Chinwag using ‘Zoom’….you don’t need an Uber to get home!
No registration, just turn up! Relax, and chat or just listen to the others.
Bring/invite a friend along and if you wish to talk about a particular subject (photo, project) or even wish to invite or know of a guest speaker to address our chinwag, just email to arrange; rotarycrowsnest@gmail.com
The fourth Friday of each month, starting Friday evening 27th August 2021 6pm,,, until,,,,
The Link for joining the meeting is; https://us04web.zoom.us/j/3833840670
‘Barman’ Phil, will be the host for the night, but this will rotate.
Stay Safe!  COVID safe!!!
See you there 6pm on 27th August
 Regards
The Chinwag Team

Next Meeting is Monday ,the 30th of August 2021 - Don Lane - SES ,North Sydney

As we are in Lockdown, it will be on ZOOM.

The SES ,or State Emergency Services in North Sydney is the local combat agency for floods ,storms and tsunamis .So come along and hear what their representative ,Don Lane, has to say.
Last Monday, the  23rd of August - Angie Elder and Georgia Thacker from Canteen

During the Meeting:
Angie is the NSW Manager of Canteen and Georgia is NSW Programme Officer for Canteen.
Canteen is a not for profit organisation set up by patients in the mid 80's to help young patients and their families cope with the emotional and social impact of cancer which in turn helps them develop resilience and can rebuild the foundations that crumble beneath them when cancer turns their lives upside down.
Georgia spoke of their Video Game Journey .which our Club will be sponsoring to the tune of $5000.Using the software programme Discord ,and Minecraft ,which have been used to develop specific games .The budget involves the purchase of 8 Xbox consoles ,and controllers .Plus the game pass ,which has to be refreshed annually .So ,in addition to the two they will keep in their office another six can be used at home by the Canteen patients .A brief demonstration of the game was given.
The games are a good way to connect between the social workers and the patients and put them at ease.
Canteen operate out of an office in the heart of Newtown where they support some 150 patients annually ,with more than 80% of the funding from donations.
Discussion points around,
So They Can  will be making a presentation to the Club ,so we will be looking forward to there up-date after such a long time .Apparently they are now involved with some 42 schools in Africa ,a big change from a few years ago ,and Howard has spoken to their new representative ,who will be speaking to us, giving an up-date on the work we have done together over the years.
Bill Lee advised that with new start up, Street Side Medics ,mentioned last week ,he has provided them with space at Storage Works ,so Bill has asked them to be a Guest Speaker as pay back .Well done Bill .
Much discussion on interpreting the various lockdown rules around mask wearing and exercising .And I'm sure there will be more in future weeks.
Phil also appealed again for Members to join in the "Chin Wag" session ,commencing 6pm,Friday ,the 27th of August .Phil will be MCing the first of these Zoom discussion for Clubs within our Cluster Group .So ,grab a bottle of your favourite beverage ,and join in the Chat Session .Zoom details to be advised shortly.
