PRESIDENT'S COLUMN

Dear Friends at Crows Nest

OH WHAT A NIGHT !   Not only is this a hit song from the musical JERSEY BOYS but the take-home feeling of the 25 members and guests ( a record) who came to hear PP Geoff Pritchard weave his story about the spy circle in Australia during the 1950's leading into the Petrov Affair!
We were enthralled by the story of the Russian doctor who made his way to Sydney after the war only to be approached by ASIO to infiltrate the Russian embassy and befriend Petrov a proven Russian spy.  And so the story continues.
We also welcomed Pres Andre Hariman, potential new member Gloria ( a BBQ Buddy) and her son Matthew, Cheryl (another BBQ buddy), Gen, Karen ( Catherine's friend) our AG Jenny May and the lovely Lydia Lee.
Bill's international Toast to the Rotary Club of Shanghai was fascinating and informative.  Thanks Bill.
We covered Working With Children,  stranded volunteers in Vanuatu , the Crows Nest Fair and the CHANGEOVER Dinner on Monday July 8 together with  our bid for a District Community Service Award for our Buddy Benches.
So, what a  night?   Productive, Friendly and Informative.
Let's keep the momentum going and make this Club the best ever!

Cheers for now

Last Meeting - Monday 20th May, 2024 - Geoff Pritchard - Cold War

Toast:  Bill Lee toasted the Rotary Club of Beijing

Tom has mentioned Geoff's enthralling story.

In 1949 ASIO (Australian Security Intelligence Organisation) was set up to try and monitor the ‘Cold War’ which was secretly occurring around the world after the end of WWII. ASIO discovered that a young Russian doctor practising in the Wollongong area of NSW had been actively involved in espionage in Europe during WWII. They convinced the doctor to move to Sydney and set him up discreetly in practice in Macquarie St close to ASIO headquarters. He was then cultivated as a spy for Australia specifically against Russia who he despised due to their treatment of his family who had fled from Ukraine to Poland at the start of the war.

He was able to infiltrate the Russian embassy in Canberra by befriending their so-called third Secretary, Vladimir Petrov, a recent arrival to Australia and, as it turned out, a KGB agent.  He was given the job of seducing the doctor to spy in Australia for Russia……a typical double agent.

He was successful, and the Petrovs settled in Australia. For more details there is a book available.

Thanks Geoff for an very interesting story.
