PRESIDENT'S COLUMN
Dear Rotarians,
Christmas is upon us once again!
A major activity next week is the ‘Tree of Joy’ at Chatswood Chase which invites donations of money and gifts for worthwhile charities.   Note to members, there remains a vacancy on the roster!   If you were unable to commit to the roster, please call in to see a very worthwhile project, close to the Vintage Cellars shop, ground floor.  Thanks again to Sue & Angelo.
Also at the request of the Crows Nest Community Centre we will be running a BBQ during the Crows Nest Christmas Carols @ 4pm on Sunday 8th Dec.  Members to assist and Singers and non-singers are invited for a great sing along celebrating Christmas festive time!
A big ‘Thank You’ to Philip for agreeing to be “Santa” for the Crows Nest Community Centre on Friday 13th, Philip will be presenting items donated at the ‘Tree of Joy’, to the regular visitors to the centre.   11am if you are around, you are welcome to pop in and meet Santa, again.
Along with the D Café project, which had another successful meeting this week, it is pleasing to be working with such a key community group as the Crows Nest Community Centre.
Finally I look forward to our Xmas Party/Giving night next Monday night 9th Dec.   It will be good to close the year out when Past President Sue hands out significant cheques to some of our key charities.   Please come and hear how they will use the funds we have raised this year.
Please note, there will be no regular Monday lunchtime Meetings until we come together again in the New Year on Monday 13 January 2020.
Yours in Rotary, Wishing you a Happy Christmas!
Mark

Last Monday the 2nd of December- Ian Burnet was our Guest Speaker

Ian Burnet, who has spoken at our Club Meetings before on other books he has written on the history of the East Indies, discussed his latest release, the Tasman Map – Abel Tasman, the Dutch East India Co. and the first Dutch Discoveries of Australia

This story of the first Dutch voyages to discover Australia is set against the background of the struggle of the newly formed Dutch Republic to gain its independence from the Kingdom of Spain and the struggle of the Dutch East India Company for trade supremacy in the East Indies against its Portuguese, Spanish and English rivals.

Over a period of only forty years from 1606 to 1644 and based on sixteen separate discoveries the first map of Australia took shape. The Tasman Map shows a recognizable outline of the north, west and south coasts of Australia that was not to change for another 125 years until the British explorer James Cook charted the east coast in 1770.

It was in 1925 and 1933 that the Mitchell Library in Sydney, Australia, acquired both the Tasman Huydecoper Journal and the Tasman Bonaparte Map. The story of how the library managed to acquire these treasures of Dutch exploration and cartography will bring new recognition to these icons of both Dutch and Australian history.
