Hello, Members and our Rotary Friends receiving this eBulletin.
Last Tuesday we joined four other clubs in an extremely enjoyable, and very informative evening with Professor Jim Elliott(see details below). As well as learning about the Kolling Institute and their project to reduce the impact of road trauma, we had some great fellowship with other local clubs and outlined a guideline for raising money for this Kolling project. We are already ready planning a "baseball hitathon" for next February. Angelo will be our focal point for this, and is happy to answer any questions, while a big Thank You to Tom for pulling last Tuesday's function together..
Look forward to seeing you Monday week at the Union Hotel.
Last Meeting - Tuesday 23rd May - Kolling Institute Dinner
Toast: N/A
Last Monday we joined with 4 other clubs to hear Professor Jim Elliott of the Kolling Institute.
Firstly, in Jim's summary of the institute we were impressed with the quality of their researchers, with a number being recognised as in the top 2% in the world.
Jim reminded us that road trauma cost us $1billion per year, and most are not not accidents as they can be prevented. Jim himself has spent 20yrs researching Road trauma, both why 2/10 victims have long terms issues, and how to change behaviour to prevent the trauma in the first place. To date there is no single reason what 2/10 of us have long term issues. Another part of his research is his access to 'Car Event Data' now stored in every air bag. Analysis of this data can lead to road safety initiatives, and improve the education which is needed to change driver behaviour. Jim pointed out the fines & demerit points do not have a significant impact on driver behaviour.
Jim has a strong passion to continue this research project and needs our support.
Finally Jim mentioned that plans are in place for next February's baseball hitathon. Get a sponsor who will give you $X for every metre of your longest hit of the baseball. Fun for all ages, with BBQs etc Donations are also accepted on their Website: North Foundation
A enjoyable & very informative evening.
