PRESIDENT'S COLUMN
Dear Rotarians,
What a pleasant surprise at last Monday’s meeting, with PDG Len Goodman, the man who introduced me to Rotary, attending our meeting with wife Joyce, and daughter Gail (my sister-in-law). Perfectly timed with Angelo’s talk on our China project, which Len was connected to . Very enjoyable meeting.
The key issue discussed was the impact of the Coronavirus. Our weekly meetings and key events, like the Pride of Workmanship, will continue unless the situation deteriorates. Bunnings are currently allowing their BBQs to continue. We will checkpoint every meeting on the situation.
Enjoy the rest of your week.
Yours in Rotary
Mark

MEETING ROSTER

         ROTARY: 2019-20

Our Next Meeting will be 16th of March 2020 when our Speaker will be Craig Wood from Destiny Rescue.

Craig is the new NSW/ACT Community Partnership Manager for Destiny Rescue, and he will update us about Destiny Rescue.  Craig has personally been involved with many of these rescue operations and I believe we will find this most interesting.

At our Meeting on 24th February 2020 the Guest Speaker was Angelo Raveane, reviewing the history of the Club's Overseas Projects, principally in Bin Xian,China

Angelo spoke on projects carried out in 1997 onwards, initiated by Bill Lee,in the BinXian Area, near the Terra Cota Warriors, and followed up by Bjorn ,our International Director at the time.Works involved, pumping water from the valley to the mountainous area where the people lived(previously it was a 3 hour trip carting the water up the mountain),plus education training programmes, including teacher training and books. Projects also involved Burwood Club.Area was really in the back blocks of inland China, where horse and cart transport was the norm and people used to live in Caves.Great apple growing area. Now,a major coal mining area, utilising the low grade local coal.In all some 16 schools involved in the various projects up until 2003.Close to $2 Million involved in various projects with money coming in from RAWCS, AusAid and other Rotary Clubs, our Club spent some $60K. Also supplied some 60 wheelchairs.Len Goodman's District was  a donor to the Xian Project, and Gail was also involved in the Teacher Training exercise.
Special Guests today included Len Goodman, past District Governor in the Canberra Region, his wife,Joyce and daughter Gail, who also happens to be the Sister-in Law of our President.
As a finale,Angelo showed a 10 minute video on the work he's been involved in for the last 10 years with RYLA in East Timor. It really was amazing how much the course had improved the self confidence of the participants and helped them move forward with meaningful work.
The International Toast was proposed by Sue Raveane to the Rotary Club of Marambio,Antarctica. It is the first of only two Rotary Club in the Antarctic continent, and was founded on May 13, 1997 by the then President of Rotary International, Luis Vicente Giay.
The Club currently consists of members of the permanent contingent of the Marambio base in Antarctica of the Argentine Air Force. They live all year under the harsh climate prevailing in the area to provide support for various missions and international scientific collaboration with other Argentine Antarctic bases and also for bases of other countries. When travelling near the South Pole consider dropping in one of the two Rotary Clubs in Antarctica. The 20 member Rotary Club of base Antarctica Esperanza was chartered in November 2005, and the 9-member Rotary Club of base Marambio - Antarctica was chartered in May 1997.Both are Spanish speaking clubs that meet Wednesday evenings.
