President's Report.

Rotarians,

What a busy month !
Firstly,  we finalised the order for our Breast Screening device for Royal North Shore Hospital, via the North Foundation. The $15,000 was made up of $5000 District Grant, $2000 from Lane Cove Rotary, $4000 from Angelo’s Giving night and $4000 from my 2026 Giving night allocation. A big thanks to Louise who will arrange a plague and photo session.

Michael and I spent a couple of hours assisting at the Lane Cove fair on Sunday 9th to continue our mutual support of other local clubs. Then thanks to George and Leah we had a successful day at our Crows Nest fair, resulting in 13 people showing an interest in learning more about Rotary, as well as continuing our local community ties. To wrap up the month we have joined three other Rotary clubs in running 3 BBQs (2500 sausages!) prior to the Mary’s House walk this Sunday 26th.

We had two excellent speakers this month who both opened our eyes to two key community issues

Firstly, on October 13 a quiet lunch with Annie Johnston from Taldumande Youth Services, who reminded us that there are 46,000 homeless under age 25, and how they have integrated Phoenix House into their organisation. A compelling case study clarified the need and impact of Taldumande Services.

This week’s dinner speaker was Janine Wood from Mary’s House explaining how our support and donation have saved the lives of domestic violence victims. Three case studies reinforced the community issues, and the positive impact Mary’s House is having. Which reminds me, that Louise has placed a mobile phone ‘collection box’ at RNSH. These phones are recycled and given to DV victims.

Very pleased to see Sam assisting our District Governor in understanding what makes good clubs work. I’m looking forward to his recommendations for the District, and our club in particular !

Finally, with Angelo’s help, I was able to recycle 53 stretcher beds being replaced at Royal North Shore Hospital. Angelo’s contact sends these beds to various overseas organisations who are in need of these beds.

Please support Ross in selling our Trifecta tickets and look forward to catching up at our AGM on Monday 3rd November.

October 6  Taldumande

Annie Johnson gave us a great insight into the services provided by Taldumande - a not for profit organisation supporting vulnerable and homeless children, young people and their families across greater Sydney. (The full presentation available on request).

With 70+ youth accommodation required every night there are a series of support programs including:
  • Accommodation for 12-24yrs old with skills development, financial support, personal case management and aftercare follow-up.
  • Family programs which create family plans and support goals
  • Justice diversionary programs
  • Phoenix House youth Hub Management for setting personal goals
  • SEED is designed for female students to develop a strong sense of self-worth, emotional resilience, and effective communication skills.
  • Beach Reach is a night mobile youth outreach service in support of the NSW Police Force, servicing the Northern Beaches.
Crows  Nest Rotary looks forward to continuing the support of Tadumande.

October 20  Mary's House

Janine Wood and Jennifer Hart joined us and gave a sobering presentation on the state of domestic violence. Janine pointed out that the lower Northshore and Northern Beaches had among the highest rates of domestic violence in the state. There is clear need for more support. Jansine explained the two services provided by Marys House: Refuge and Community Programs. Both of these are growing in demand and Mary's House is actively seeking funding including fund raising activities such as the Mary's House walk. The refuge is for those in imminent danger and the community program is an outreach to assist and support victims in dealing with domestic violence and rebuilding their lives.

Mary's House is very appreciative of the support provided by Crows Nest Rotary. As Janine said, by providing funds for the refuge we are preventing victims from drowning and by supporting the community programs victims are "taught  to swim". Crows Nest Rotary is proud to support Mary's House and the incredible staff and volunteers.
