PRESIDENT'S COLUMN

 

Dear Crows Nest Rotarians, 
 
Last Monday's meeting at the Crows Nest Hotel was both a triumph and a disappointment. Triumph in the fact that we had Acting Sgt Larissa Ryan and Snr Const. Kylie Dodds from the Domestic Violence Team from the North Shore. Their area covers from Roseville to the harbour and just as wide.  What fascinating tales they told of daily life responding to domestic violence incidences and the care and attention they gave to victims of these events especially the support after the event in relation to housing, finance, food and transport.  It also included the issuing of AVO's to defuse the situation.   We are justly proud of these officers of our Police Force who strive daily to keep our most vulnerable safe.
The disappointment came in that we had so many apologies ( all valid) to hear this great message.

Still some vacancies for late comers for our special end of year night. Please make every effort to see where our hard earned funds go and the worthy recipients of our fund raising.  A warm welcome to Julie Taylor (friend of George & Jo) who will be a BBQ buddy.

Louise, Kate, Sue and I attended Cammeray Public School on Wednesday for the official handing over of the BUDDY BENCHES.

Last Meeting - Monday 4th December - Police Domestic Violence Unit.
 
Larrisa Ryan & Kylie Dodds, from the North Shore Domestic Violence unit, joined us and we had a very interactive discussion on DV. 
 
DV nows takes up 60% of the police's time, and staff numbers have doubled in the last 5 years. 90% of victims are women, with 10% men. 54 victims died last year. 
Every day the unit reviews the previous 24hrs of DV incidents which can be in many forms (Financial, physical, sexual, verbal, mental, etc), and they ensure victims get a call within 48hrs from one of the many agencies which can help them. If not enough evidence for charging, then a AVO is usually effective. Time is spent in educating the victim, and understanding the reasons why victims will not just walk out. 4 times a year they have an operation to target all outstanding open issues, and a State wide registry has now been established.  We also explored the root causes which can be drugs, alcohol, brought up in a home with DV. Prevention is mainly down to awareness. 
 
President Tom thanked the officers with the words "Thank God you are there, with your devotion & dedication".

 - Ross is co-ordinating the BBQ at this Sunday's Xmas Carols. 
 - George has interviewed and finalised our RYLA nomination - Bridget Heeney. 
 - Tree of Joy will be only a 'tree placement' at the Willoughby Library & Coles(Westfield Chatswood)   
 - Board meeting this Thursday 5pm 7th December.

Louise, Kate, Sue and I attended Cammeray Public School on Wednesday for the official handing over of the BUDDY BENCHES.  What a treat?  Nearly the whole school was present to be in the photos and the teachers were of high praise for the benches.
