International Service exemplifies our global reach in promoting peace and understanding.  We support this service avenue by sponsoring or volunteering on international projects, seeking partners abroad, and more.

Over the last 10 to 15 years, Crows Nest Rotary has undertaken numerous International Projects.  They include:

Surabaya School Toilets

Construction of toilet facilities at a school in Surabaya, Indonesia.  Crows Nest Rotary provided the financial support and the Rotary Club of Surabaya provided oversight of construction activities.

Binxian Schools

The construction of some 22 schools within the Binxian Province in China – a very poor area where many of the people were still living in cave houses in the side of the mountains.  Several schools were also provided with a water supply and basic toilet facilities.

Fohorem Water & Sanitation

Water supply and sanitation facilities for a series of three villages (about 4,000 people) in a remote area in the Fohorem sub district in the mountains of East Timor.  This involved designing a gravity fed water supply system and teaching the local villagers to install the pipework, construction of tanks and some basic plumbing skills to maintain the system.

Christmas for Orphans

Sponsorship of an annual Christmas Function for the Orphans of Dili in East Timor over the last five years, an event which has grown from about 400 to 900 kids.  The event is organised and run by the Rotary Club of Dili and the local Hash House Harrier group.  The orphans and their carers enjoy the party, play games and receive a backpack with some treats, pencils, crayons, etc  - a really big deal for them.  It's amazing haw far about $2,000 can go to assist these orphans.

English Language Training

Sponsorship of two young ladies from East Timor to come to Sydney for three months English language training.  They then returned to Dili and assisted in training their peer group in the language skills they had acquired.

Chiang Rai Water Project

A water project in the Chiang Rai area of Thailand, where Crows Nest Rotary supported the construction of water supplies to six villages.  The technical solution here was very simple, and had an additional benefit that we were not aware of at the outset.  This area is occupied by ethnic minorities and one of the major issues in these very poor areas is that of child slavery  -  young girls sold off for prostitution, because their families have got into financial debt to drug dealers.  We advised the local Adventist church group and they are involved in addressing this issue and the Rotary Club of Chiang Mai is also assisting.

Lao Water & Sanitation

Presently involved jointly with the Rotary Club of Mosman and a few other clubs in our Rotary District 9685 to develop water supply and basic sanitation to a series of about 10 villages in a rural area of Lao PDR.  We are providing financial support and technical design of the water systems.  Another NGO is providing construction oversight and the local Vientiane RC is assisting with training of the local people in the basic plumbing skills necessary to maintain the systems.
